KOCHI: When a baby girl was born to Jisha C.S. and Shibu last Saturday, it proved another victory for medical science. For the baby, along with the amniotic membrane, had come out of the uterus prematurely in the 24th week of pregnancy. Then, Gynaecologist Hafeez Rehman of Sunrise Hospital, in a procedure termed encirclage, had put the baby back in the uterus. Jisha, who had suffered multiple abortions and was under infertility treatment, delivered the baby, weighing 3.22 kg, on Saturday after 32 weeks. Encirclage, a new technique developed by gynaecologists, was presented at the All-India Conference of Gynaecologists held in New Delhi recently. The technique involves pushing the baby back to the uterus with a balloon (soft object) under general anaesthesia. SuccessfulDr. V.P. Pylee, former professor of Thrissur Medical College, said that the technique had proved successful in about 57 per cent cases of the 20-odd cases that they had done till now.
