CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Monday released an audio CD with a recording of a telephone conversation, allegedly between Social Welfare Minister Poongothai and Additional DGP and Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption S.K.Upadhyay. In the recording, played before newsmen here, Mr. Upadhyay was asked about a corruption case against the Minister’s relative employed in the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, who was arrested by the DVAC. Dr. Swamy told reporters that he had sent a copy of the CD to the Governor, requesting him to “remove” the Minister who had violated the code of conduct by trying to influence a government official for personal gain. Hailing the Supreme Court’s verdict on Ramar Sethu, Dr. Swamy wanted the government to declare it a national monument. He urged the government to develop the Tuticorin port as an international one and provide a national highway from Tuticorin to Kolkata along the East Coast. Such measures would improve the port’s earnings substantially, he added.
