Rajasekhar Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, has appealed to the voters to choose the Congress for providing good governance and reject the Janata Dal (S) and BJP, which had failed to deliver the goods. Addressing a public meeting here on Monday, he charged that development works had come to a standstill during the Janata Dal (S)-BJP coalition rule. Expressing concern over the pathetic condition of roads, he said it spoke of the kind of governance given by the Janata Dal (S)- BJP coalition government and how development works stood neglected. He said that Congress had always been pro-people and had come out with several welfare programmes for the poor. C.K. Jaffer Sharief, former Union Minister, said there could be no development without a stable government. He said the Congress would implement all the promises made in its manifesto. Ambareesh, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, expressed confidence that the Congress would come to power in the State. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has expressed concern over the failure of Karnataka in evincing interest on modernisation of the Tungabhadra canals. Responding to questions by presspersons, Mr. Reddy said he was keen on modernising the Tungabhadra canals, which according to him, was beneficial to both States. “I sought an appointment with the then Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, but there was no response,” he said. Mr. Reddy said he had proposed widening of the high-level canal to enable Andhra Pradesh to draw a certain quantity of water, which was being drawn from Kurnool-Kadapa canal. Widening of the canal would benefit both the States, he said. To a question, he clarified that he knew the Reddy brothers in Bellary as relatives of Congress leaders in Andhra Pradesh and also as industrialists. But he had come here to campaign for the Congress. Mr. Reddy denied that there was illegal mining on the State border. “Following allegations, I got it verified and found that there no illegal mining,” he said. Mr. Reddy also denied that there was any border dispute between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Telugu chairMr. Reddy said Andhra Pradesh would consider sponsoring a Telugu Chair at Kannada University in Hampi. He said he would take up the matter with the concerned and arrange for releasing funds. PromisesRaichur Staff Correspondent reports: Seeking votes in favour of the Congress, Mr. Reddy said the Janata Dal (S) had joined hands with the BJP just for sake of power. The people should reject the “father and sons” rule in the State and vote for the Congress. He said the promises made in the party Congress manifesto would be kept.
