Pseudo police, media gang held ‘for robberies’

Staff Reporter

They were accused of targeting junior artistes

HYDERABAD: Three persons, who were accused of robbing junior film artistes of cash and jewellery after raiding their houses posing as police and media personnel, were arrested by police on Monday.

An amount of Rs. 26,000, nine mobile phones, gold jewellery weighing 60 grams and a motorcycle were recovered from them, the Commissioner’s Task Force DCP V.B. Kamalasan Reddy told a press conference. Among the arrested persons was a former Home Guard of Jeedimetla police station, K. Vijay Kumar, 30, who was removed from service for abstaining from duties.

Kumar formed a gang with P. Raju Naik, 29, and U. Devender. The trio used to barge into the houses of junior artistes claiming it was a joint operation of police and media. They would accuse the inmates of organising flesh trade, beat them up and forcibly collect money and gold ornaments from them.

In some cases, they identified some brothels. Either Naik or Kumar would go as customer and when the sex worker was sent to his room, he would ring up his associates to raid the brothel posing as policemen.

Later, they would collect money, mobile phones and jewellery and flee.

As the brothel organisers did not approach police fearing action against them, these robberies never came to light, the DCP explained. The arrested persons, along with the seized articles, were handed over to S.R. Nagar police for further investigation.
