Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article “Great Patriotic War — the main front of the War” by Ilya Kramnik (May 8). The Eastern Front was the most decisive theatre of operations during World War II. There is no dispute over this, even among western historians. At El Alamein, the tide of the war was turned, and the Germans suffered their first defeat on land. But, then, it never shook the confidence and morale of the German Army the way the defeat at Stalingrad did. The North African front was a mere sideshow for Hitler, and it is known that the main cause of the German defeat there was lack of supplies. In fact, all eminent historians, including Liddell Hart, and Winston Churchill, acknowledge the decisive nature of the Stalingrad battle. Another important battle on the Eastern Front was in Kursk about which Adolf Hitler said: “Whenever I think of this attack my stomach turns over.” M. Suraj, Chennai
