Corrections and clarifications

* A sentence in “Mridhangist Subramania Pillai remembered” (May 12, 2008) was “‘He provided the opportunity to accompany late Madurai Mani Iyer at the marriage of late actor T.S. Balaiah ….’” It should have been “… at the marriage of late actor T.S. Balaiah’s daughter”.

* The caption of the standalone photograph (May 11, 2008, page 1) captioned “Hat-trick hero” was “Celebration Time: Chennai Super Kings paceman L. Balaji is congratulated by his team-mates after claiming a hat-trick, the first in IPL, to end the contest against Kings XI Punjab at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Balaji took five for 24 as the host won by 18 runs to register its sixth win in eight games. He was adjudged Man of the Match.” It should have been “sixth win in nine games”.

* The first paragraph in a report “Ratan Tata, L.N. Mittal receive Padma Vibhushan” (May 11, 2008) was “The former administrator and diplomat, P.N. Dhar, industrialists Ratan Tata and Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, the former Chief Justice of India, Justice A. S. Anand, scientist and co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Delhi Metro Corporation chief E. Sreedharan and the world chess champion Viswanathan Anand were honoured on Saturday with the Padma Vibhushan for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields.” We repeat the clarification issued in this column on February 20, 2008: “Merci Olsson, Marketing and Communications Manager, Nobelprize.org, Sweden (the official web site of the Nobel Foundation) clarifies that the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and not R.K. Pachauri. Mr. Pachauri participated in the award ceremony as a chairman of the IPCC. (The 2007 Peace Nobel was also shared by Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr.)” This has also been pointed out by a reader.

* The mouthpiece of the Shiv Sena is the Saamna, and not Saamana, as was published in a PTI report “Sena targets newspaper supplement, school” (May 12, 2008).

* The third paragraph in a column “Election signs” (“Media Matters” – The Hindu Magazine, May 11, 2008, page 3) was “Expectations of autonomy from Prasar Bharati these days are low, but even so, this is a first. In its decade of existence, the first two chairmen have been journalists, Nikhil Chakravarti and K.V. Kamath ….” It should have been M.V. Kamath.
