Young NRI found dead at Delhi residence

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A young non-resident Indian was found dead with his throat slit under highly mysterious circumstances in his rented flat at Mukherjee Nagar here on Monday. The police have registered a case of murder but are also investigating other possible angles to the death.

The bizarre case came to light on Monday morning when the domestic help of landlord Harjeet Singh went up to the third floor of the building and found the door to 21-year-old Keenan Mehra’s room latched from inside. She knocked at the door but did not get any response. Alarmed by a foul smell emanating from the room, the maid hastened to alert Harjeet Singh and informed him that Keenan had not opened the door on Sunday too.

Mr. Singh broke open the door and found Keenan lying face down in a pool of caked blood in the bathroom. He called up the police. The police found a knife stuck in Keenan’s neck. The condition of the body suggested that Keenan had bled to death almost 24 hours earlier. Since the door was latched from inside and there was no other possible entry into the house, the police are wondering what exactly led to Keenan’s death. Enquiries revealed that Keenan’s family is based in the US where his father Achal Mehra runs a magazine. The family came to India in April. Keenan, who had graduated in philosophy, wanted to pursue a Masters in the same subject and had taken a house on rent on Hudson Lane . His parents had left for the US by then.

According to the police, Keenan hardly knew anyone in Delhi other than his aunt who lives at Vaishali in neighbouring Ghaziabad.
