‘International Nurses’ Week’ celebrations commence at MKCG Medical College


Best Asha volunteers to be given award

Safe delivery will reduce infant mortality,

says Minister


BERHAMPUR: The one hundred and eighty eighth birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale was celebrated at the school of nursing on MKCG Medical College premises in the city on Monday.

The ‘International Nurses’ Week’ celebrations started off at the institution with this function. Standing before the portrait of Florence Nightingale the news students of the institution took the oath of service. The ‘capping’ ceremony for these students was also held which depicts their formal introduction into the nursing profession. This nursing institution has an intake of 50 students for its three-year course. The student nurses’ association of the institution is organising the week-long celebration.

Superintendent of the MKCG medical college hospital J.P.Behera, principal of the medical college S.M.Bag, and Berhampur MLA R.C.C.Patnaik attended the function as guests. The celebrations for international nurses’ week would continue at the institution till May 18. Seminars and debates on role of nurses in present world, competitions among students in quizzing, painting, rangoli and talent shows would be part of the celebrations.

Meanwhile, State Health Minister Sanatan Bisi announced that from this year best ‘Asha’ volunteers working in rural areas of Orissa would be given ‘Mother Teresa Seva award’. This new award has been constituted to promote Asha volunteers, who are backbone of rural health care in extreme remote areas of the State.

Mr Bisi announced it during the review meeting held in Bhubaneswar on Monday to discuss the progress of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) since 2005. Mr Bisi stressed the need for safe deliveries which would reduce infant mortality and death of mothers. State Health Secretary T. K. Pandey and officials of the NRHM attended this review meeting.
