BHUBANESWAR: Prime accused in Judo coach Biranchi Das murder case gangster Raja Acharya was denied bail by a local court on Monday. The accused, who moved the court a day after he was remanded to judicial custody, was refused bail on the ground that the case was of serious nature in which investigation was still going on. In another development, two police officials of Bargarh police station of the city were placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. The officials - Sub-Inspector Niranjan Mallick and Assistant Sub-Inspector R.K. Rout, had taken accused Raja Acharya to the Capital hospital for medical checkup on Sunday when the gangster had spoken to the media at length. Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Arun Kumar Sahu dismissed the bail application of the gangster after hearing arguments by prosecution counsel Bhaskar Maharana and defence counsel Bana Bihari Mohanty. The prosecution opposed the bail plea saying the court should not grant bail to the accused as the offence was of serious nature and the investigating was half way. Release of the accused at this stage would seriously hamper the investigation, prosecution counsel argued. Defence counsel prayed for grant of bail saying that his client had been framed in the case and his name had not been mentioned in the First Information Report. In another development, top police officials held a meeting to take a decision about lodging the gangster in another jail instead of the special jail at Jharpada locality of the city. The meeting, however, could not take a decision in this regard. Once the police decide on the jail where they should keep the gangster, they will move the court seeking necessary orders. The police were not keen on keeping the accused in Jharpada jail as other accused in the case as well as other gangsters were lodged in the same prison. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Bijay Kumar Sharma told reporters that the investigation was progressing well. The police, however, had not able to gather necessary evidence to know about the motive behind the murder of the Judo coach. The murder had taken place April 13 evening.
