BHOPAL: A Congress delegation led by Madhya Pradesh PCC president Suresh Pachouri met the State Chief Electoral Officer, J. S. Mathur, on Monday and handed over a memorandum alleging large-scale irregularities in the voters’ lists published for the coming Assembly elections. Besides Mr. Pachouri, the delegation included Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jamuna Devi and chairman of the State Congress Campaign Committee Ajay Singh. The party has demanded immediate steps to correct the flaws and publication of a revised list. It also wants a committee to be set up to probe the matter and fix the responsibility for taking action against the “guilty officers”. The Congress alleged that after identifying some residential areas thousands of names had been deleted and wrong names entered in the voters’ list by government officials. This, according to the party, was revealed during the recent Lok Sabha by-election from Betul where a large number of people were not allowed to vote even though they had identity cards. The memorandum alleged that about 1.25 lakh voters were denied the right to vote in that election. Similar situation prevailed in other parts of the State, it added. Another point raised by the party pertains to the preparation of the voters’ identity cards. The Election Commission’s attention has been drawn to its earlier order which set in motion the process of preparing the identity cards. This work still remains incomplete as the officers have failed to meet the schedule and turn up to complete this exercise at many places in the past, the Congress has pointed out, adding that thousands of identity cards distributed among the voters carry wrong details. The Congress has urged the Election Commission to hold special camps at all polling booths to rectify the mistakes and issue identity cards to all the voters.
