APCC chief faults TRS decision

Special Correspondent

Says it had gone back on commitment not to field candidate in Khairatabad

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president D. Srinivas took objection to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s decision to field its nominee for the Khairatabad byelection slated for May 29.

Mr. Srinivas recalled that all parties concurred on leaving the Khairatabad constituency, represented by P. Janardhan Reddy who vociferously highlighted Telangana issues till he breathed his last, uncontested.

“I was hopeful that the Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao will abide by his commitment. But, I am leaving it to him,” he said.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, he expressed confidence that the Congress would win a majority of the seats in the forthcoming elections to 17 Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats in the region. “If we can win nine out of 17 seats going to the polls, is it not a majority,” he asked.

‘Not connected’

Asked about the alleged killing of a Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader by Congress activists in Warangal district, he said the party did not react as the leaders were in no way connected with the incident.

Moreover, it was “natural” for the political parties to indulge in mudslinging at the time of elections.

Simple affair

Mr. Srinivas said arrangements for the re-dedication day, the one-day plenum of the party on May 14 marking the completion of four years in office, had been made.

The event would be a simple and purely party affair.

There would be no Government stalls and the design of banners and posters would be in tune with the Election Commission guidelines.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) coordinator P.J. Kurien and AICC secretary Iqbal Singh confirmed their participation for the re-dedication fete while Mr. Srinivas was doubtful whether AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily could make it owing to the elections in Karnataka.
