Mayor asks Railways to keep separate bins for disposing of waste Segregation method in all apartments soon KOCHI: Kochi Corporation will transport only segregated waste to the solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram. Mayor Mercy Williams, who convened a meeting of trade bodies and public organisations in the city here on Monday, said in a press release that intensive campaigns aimed at spreading the message of segregating the waste will be launched in the coming days. Kerala Chamber of Commerce will cooperate with the Corporation in segregating the waste collected from various trade zones. Ms. Williams has asked the Railway authorities to keep two separate bins for collecting organic and non-organic waste at Railway stations. Railways will cooperate with the Corporation in spreading the message of segregating waste. Special announcements and television promotional will be introduced, as part of the initiative. The Kerala Builders Forum assured the Corporation authorities that solid waste processing method will be introduced in all apartments in the city. The Corporation will collect non-organic waste from apartments. The forum will set up a plastic shredding machine at Panampilly Nagar. The plastic generated here will be used for road tarring. Police personnel will check dumping of waste in public places. Night squads operating in the city will monitor dumping of waste in such areas. Stringent action will be taken against those found violating the rules and regulations regarding waste dumping. Ms. Williams said that dumping of waste and failure to segregate the waste are punishable under the by-law prescribed for waste processing. The Corporation will impose fines on those violating the provisions in the by-law.
