The recent decision of Tiruchi Corporation to impose penalty for dumping waste and many other offences like splitting, defecating, burning garbage, disposing of construction waste in public places should be welcomed by every right thinking citizen. However, the Corporation should take a step by step approach lest the well-meant action programme should fail to yield the desired results. It is the duty of service organisations, Exnora, educational institutions and corporate bodies to extend support to the corporation. K. G. Meenakshi Tiruchi Operate more countersWhen I visited the Railway reservation counter in Srirangam to book tickets for Pallavan Express on May 5, 2008, only one counter out of the two was in operation and the crowd was pretty large for a single counter to handle. This resulted in an exorbitant delay in getting my tickets. The Tiruchi Railway Divisional Manager should realise that during summer vacation there will be huge rush at the reservation counters and the closed counter should also be made operative enabling quick and better service to the waiting applicants at Srirangam Railway station. P. S. Subrahmanian Srirangam Train serviceWith the withdrawal of the Tiruchi-Mangalore Express, the people of the central region are deprived of a morning train to Coimbatore. At present the Chennai Egmore-Mangalore train arrives and departs at an inconvenient time at Tiruchi and also reaches Coimbatore late. Hence a new express or super fast train should be introduced between Karaikudi and Coimbatore such that it departs from Karaikudi at 6.30 a.m. and reaches Coimbatore at 1p.m. via Tiruchi. Similarly it can depart from Coimbatore at 14.15 hrs and reach Tiruchi at 19.15 hrs and Karaikudi at 21.30 hrs. This train, if introduced would definitely benefit the students and migrant population who are now entirely dependant on buses putting tremendous pressure on road traffic. I request the elected representatives and the railway authorities to do the needful. Sriram Kumar. M
Woraiyur IIThe summer special services are not encouraging as there are still lack of berths and sitting facilities in all the southern district trains from Chennai Egmore. The Madurai Mahal Express must be reintroduced with the composition of few unreserved and First A/C, Second A/C and ordinary first class and with second class 3 and 2 tiers coaches. It can be operated via Tambaram, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Srirangam, Tiruchi and Dindigul. The Railways should reintroduce Madurai Mahal Express with 5 minutes halt at Srirangam. K. Venkatesan Rockfort Agraharam Identity certificates
Regarding the police warnings on engaging servant maids and drivers, it would be appropriate to ask for their ration card and driving licence in original and retain a copy of it before engaging them. This would in a way provide identity proof. Jayashree Dindigul Road Additional flyoverIt is a known fact that the Tiruchi market area is highly congested for vehicular traffic. Due to this, people living on Thanjavur Road find it difficult to visit important areas like Tennur, Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur and Puthur. For a distance of hardly 2 km, it takes up to 40 minutes to negotiate the traffic near the market. The roundabout route via Oyameri is also not properly laid. Now that a flyover is planned to come up at Palpannai Roundabout to connect the four-lane Chennai By-Pass Road, I request the authorities to construct an additional flyover from the Palpannai Roundabout over the market ending near Ramakrishna theatre (where the Tennur flyover starts) or Passport office (Marakkadai). This would be a boon to not only the residents living on the Thanjavur Road but also those attending the educational institutions on this road. A. Raghunathan BHEL Township Proper arrangementsThe Kendriya Vidyalaya School, Narimedu, was a centre for the AIEEE examinations. Authorities here were very strict in not allowing any of the parents accompanying their wards inside the school throughout the day. Their concern in preventing trespass in the exam hall area is understandable. At the same time, they should be a little more humanitarian in their approach. All the elders were forced to loiter throughout the day in the scorching sun in the bus shelter and pavements in and around the school. They could have simply allowed them to sit under the shady trees inside the campus. Kendriya Vidyalaya School authorities should take a cue from NIT-Tiruchi, where the previous week, IIT entrance exam was conducted and all accompanying persons were allowed to rest under the shady trees in the college ground. N. Rangarajan Srirangam Continuous effortsThis refers to ‘Amudasurabhi’ project launched by the JCI Tiruchi Eve (City page 3 dated May 3 in The Hindu). This scheme was suggested by Sri Kanchi Maha Swami, some 50 years back. Several devotees have implemented this project in various temples in and around Chennai for years together. Now JCI Tiruchi Eve has launched this project. Much continuous work is required for the successful implementation of this project. P.N. Sankararaman Srirangam Take actionDried peas being sold in markets in Tiruchi are soaked in copper sulphate solution to look green which is hazardous to consumers. Similarly farmers are dipping black or purple tinge brinjals and cabbages in monocrotophos (pesticide) solution so as to make them shine and appear fresh. I request the Horticulture and Agriculture Ministry to take the necessary action to stop these above practices which are hazardous. P. David Teppakulam
