Commissioner of Police will be in the rank of IGP Airport to come under new commissionerate CHENNAI: A police commissionerate will be set up for the suburbs given the huge population increase and consequent policing needs, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced in the Assembly on Monday. Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for the Police department, Mr. Karunanidhi said that more than 1.2 crore people lived in the area under the present Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate. Apart from the increase in population and vehicles, many industries had to set shop in the suburbs. Mr. Karunanidhi said Mumbai city had a commissionerate and there were two such set-ups to cater to its suburbs. In Hyderabad, there was one each for the city and the suburbs. Rs.20 crore soughtA proposal seeking Rs.20 crore towards the establishment of the new office of the Commissioner of Police, with headquarters at St.Thomas Mount, has been forwarded to the State government. Police sources said on Monday that the funds would be utilised for procuring new vehicles and accessories, furniture and electronic gadgets. The new Commissionerate would have jurisdiction over 38 police stations covering Ambattur, Madhavaram and St. Thomas Mount police districts. It would cater to about 45 lakh people. The Commissioner of Police would be in the rank of Inspector-General of Police and the team of officers would include nine Deputy Commissioners, two Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police among others, sources said.While the airport will come under the new commissionerate, the IT corridor along the Thoraipakkam, Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) and Neelankarai stretch would remain with the existing Commissionerate, as they come within the Adyar police district limits. Soon after the government issued orders and appointed officers, the new Commissionerate would commence functioning, the sources said.
