New Delhi: Yuki Bhambri was unable to build on a good start and went down fighting in three sets to Adam Feeney of Australia, as the Indian challenge stumbled off to an indifferent start, in the SAIL Open $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday. After struggling to cope with the talented 15-year-old local lad, the 274th ranked Feeney recovered his composure and regrouped his game on being a break down in the second set to record a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph in two hours and three minutes. Serving well and hitting delectable passing shots against the net-rushing Aussie, Yuki got off to a flier to lead 4-1 with breaks in the third and fifth games. He lost serve in the sixth but won the set.
However, Yuki slackened the grip over the proceedings at this stage, and the Aussie clawed his way back to record a memorable victory. The duo of Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi was unable to be at its best against Prakash Amritraj and Rajeev Ram in the doubles. Bopanna later pulled out of his singles scheduled for Tuesday and stated that he was taking two weeks off before the French Open and going to London to attend to his injured knee. The results: Singles (first round): Mohammed Al Ghareeb (Kuw) bt Andrew Coelho (Aus) 7-6(4), 7-6(5); Nick Lindahl (Aus) bt Alun Jones (Aus) 7-5(5), 7-5; Ilia Marchenko (Ukr) bt Ricardo Mello (Bra) 3-6, 6-4, 6-0; Kristian Pless (Den) bt Alex Satschko (Ger) 6-4, 5-7, 6-2; Adam Feeney (Aus) bt Yuki Bhambri 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Travis Rettenmaier (US) bt Gilles Muller (Lux) 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3. Doubles (pre-quarterfinals): Rajeev Ram (US) and Prakash Amritraj bt Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi (Pak) and Rohan Bopanna 6-2, 6-3; Harsh Mankad and Ashutosh Singh bt Alexandre Kudryavtsev (Rus) and Gouichi Motomura (Jpn) 7-6(2), 6-4; Colin Ebelthite and Samuel Groth (Aus) bt Olivier Charroin and Thomas Oger (Fra) 7-6(5), 7-6(2); Brendan Evans (US) and Mustafa Ghouse bt Go Soeda and Takao Suzuki (Jpn) 6-7(5), 6-2 (retd.). — Special Correspondent
