It’s More Than Just Mechanical

General Engineering Scenario India as an economic force has been dependent on both agriculture and industry for its growth over the years since Independence. During the last decade of the 20th century, there has been a tremendous growth in the IT sector making India a leader in the service sector (IT). India has been primarily making strides of progress as a service driven economy while China, the most populous country, leads as manufacturing driven economy.

Since liberalization in early 90s the manufacturing industry in India was forced to adapt the changes that were triggered by the global competition. The sector has adapted to the changes on the technological front and also the human resources management. The impetus for growth in the Indian economy towards becoming a global leader lies in directing and developing the manufacturing sector to be the leader at the global level in the coming decades. It has been observed that while China contributes around 35% towards its economic growth from the manufacturing sector, India manages only about 17%. Experts have projected every competent manufacturing industry in India today throws up challenging jobs to engineers in Production, Design and R&D departments. Thus the demand for a mechanical engineer is an unending saga.

The Mechanical Engineering Course, the broadest of all Engineering disciplines deals with design and production of tools, machines and all other mechanical equipment to be used in industries. The industry offers a wide choice of options extending across many interdisciplinary interdependent specialities. The mechanical engineers not only design and create new products, but also develop materials for them and ways of making them. In a way, mechanical engineers are involved in creating the future. They are the driving force behind many of our technologies. The work of a mechanical Engineer can be extremely challenging and fulfilling, requiring IT design and analytical skills together with an ability to work as a team. As their work involves production, transmission and use of mechanical power and heat, they have to analyze the difference materials used for the machines and their tolerances, investigate the difference energy sources and the power they generate and design problems if any. They work as a part of a team with other engineers of difference disciplines like Electronics and Communication, to create new products. Mechanical Engineers combine with management professionals in manageing projects from beginning to end
