K. Raju

PALANI: With hoisting of the holy flag in Sri Periyanaki Amman Temple, the ‘Vaikasi Visakam’ festival, popularly known as Vasantha Utsav, commenced here on Tuesday. Hundreds of devotees witnessed the flag-hoisting ceremony.

At the outset, a special yaham was performed in the temple to mark the ceremony. After special pujas, aesthetically-decorated Lord Muthukumarasamy along with the Goddesses was taken out in a procession on the outer prakaram. Later, they were brought to the ‘Kodikatti mandalpam.’ Special ‘aradhanas’ were also performed to 30-foot high ‘dwajasthambam,’ flag post, on the outer ‘prakaram.’

With chanting of holy hymns and beating of percussion instruments, the temple chief ‘Gurukkal’ hoisted the holy flag having a picture of holy lance, peacock and cock on the ‘dwajasthambam.’

Celestial wedding for Lord Muthukumaraswamy with the Goddesses Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai will take place at 7 p.m. on May 18 and holy car procession at 4 p.m. on May 19, Vaikasi Visakam Day.

The God and the Goddess will ascend on various mounts and the hill temple would be opened at 4 a.m. during festival days. The 10-day festival will conclude on May 22.

Arrival of pilgrims to the hill temple has been increased manifold, owing to commencement of the festival. Pilgrims have been waiting at the winch station for hours to go to the hill temple and waiting in a serpentine queue to have a darshan of Lord Dhandayuthapaniswamy. With no rope car facility, the temple administration could not clear the crowd at the ground station as well as the hill station.
