PUDUCHERRY: Member of Parliament M. Ramadass requested Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss to open a specialty centre of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) at Karaikal. In a statement issued on Tuesday, he said Karaikal had a population of 1.72 lakh. The Government Hospital had been providing basic healthcare facilities to the people. But, the people had to come to JIPMER for treatment for cardiac ailments, surgery, treatment for fractures and neurological problems, he said. The region being situated close to National Highways-47 often witnessed accidents and there was no facility to provide immediate treatment, he said. “A specialty centre of JIPMER should be established in Karaikal,” he said. The Union Minister had already assured to set up such a centre during a programme at JIPMER, he added. “The expansion of JIPMER is a long-pending demand of the people of Karaikal. Initially, the centre could function from rented premises,” Mr. Ramadass suggested.
