PUDUCHERRY: Union Minister of Health Anbumani Ramadoss on Monday assured to send a team of officials to Puducherry to look into the ongoing construction of Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Medical College at Thattanchavady. The assurance comes after Ministers from the Union Territory — E. Valsaraj, V. Vaithilingam, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, Malladi Krishna Rao and M. Kandasamy — met the Union Minister in New Delhi on Monday and requested him to depute a team to Puducherry to give a report on the minimum requirements to obtain the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI) after visiting the medical college. “For a unitary project of medical college and hospital, we have to spend more funds. We have the required infrastructure at the existing government hospital — Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH & PGI) — including super specialties and doctors. We can show this hospital and obtain the MCI approval for the college,” Health Minister E. Valsaraj told The Hindu over the phone. During the meeting, Dr. Ramadoss said the MCI rules would be soon regulated and a medical college would be permitted to come up if a hospital was functioning within 15 km of radius. The medical college could utilise the services and facilities of the hospital, he added.
