Crime rate lowest in Chennai: Karunanidhi
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Crime rate in Chennai is the lowest compared to other metropolitan cities, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi informed the Assembly on Monday.
Last year, the number of people murdered in Chennai was 131, compared to 239 in Mumbai, 396 in Delhi and 193 in Hyderabad. Chennai also recorded the lowest number of dacoities (5) compared to Hyderabad (12), Delhi (37) and Mumbai (29).
In the total number of crimes recorded, Chennai had the lowest — 16,600 compared to 17,295 in Hyderabad, 26,284 in Delhi and 31,070 in Mumbai.
He said this did not mean that the police were resting on their laurels. They were being reviewed and encouraged to perform better. But there were some black sheep in the force. Mr. Karunanidhi said that he did not coin the term “black sheep,” it was done by the former Chief Minister.
But such elements would be identified and isolated and the functioning of the force fine-tuned.
