Serve patients with a smile, nurses told

Special Correspondent

International Nurses’ Day observed

NEYVELI: Nurses of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation-run Government Hospital here observed the International Nurses’ Day on Monday to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

About 100 nurses with candles in their hands, assembled in front of the Nightingale statue on the hospital premises and took a pledge to serve humanity with utmost dedication.

NLC director (Personnel) P. Babu Rao said that nurses were angels sent by God to comfort the ailing humanity, and therefore, theirs was a divine calling.

Appreciating their selfless services against odds, Mr. Rao called upon the nurses to always serve the patients with a smile and kind words.

Citing the instance of Mother Teresa, he said age was not a criterion in rendering medical care and that the nurses should put the available facilities in the hospital to optimal use.

A trauma care centre would soon be opened in the hospital to treat accident victims. Special training would be given to the nurses on modern medical treatment and they would also be taught relaxation techniques to cope with the stress related to their profession, he said.

Mr. Rao felicitated the nurses who had put in more than 30 years of service, including Jothi, Angeline Sophia, Gandhimathi, Anthoniammal, Bala Nirmala and Jayalakshmi. Mr. Rao also honoured three nurses — Amudha, Visalakshi and Meera — for having taken very few holidays.

Chief Superintendent of the hospital V. Seetharaman, NLC Chief General Manager (Administration) A. Lourdas and other officials were present.
