PUDUKOTTAI: The successful take off of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in Pudukottai district has reflected in shortage of labour in the agricultural and construction sectors. Villagers are drawn to the NREGP that ensures assured returns.

A group of women involved in widening the Pudukottai – Kuzhipirai highway at Peraiyoor village near here under the scheme on Monday said that till the implementation of the programme, they were finding it difficult to eke out their livelihood.

“We are farm workers and our earnings of Rs.30 a day as agricultural labourers was not sufficient since the rainfall during monsoons determine our duration of work,” said D. Gandhi of Peraiyur village. She used to attend to livestock in the remaining part of the year. Widening of the road to a length of four km at an expenditure of Rs.3.2 lakh would keep the rural workers preoccupied, explained another woman S. Ilanjiyam. Her companion Valliammal is relieved over being in a position to earn for the next five months. According to them, NREGP has attracted villagers who hitherto used to work in farms. Even masons had registered their names for the scheme.

The first phase of the NREGP programme is currently under implementation at an outlay of Rs. 1.92 crores in 65 villages at the rate of five villages in 13 unions in the district, according to Collector D. Uthirakkumaran.
