Maoists ask king to leave palace

Prerana Marasini

Kathmandu: Nepal’s king Gyanendra has been asked by the Maoists to leave the Narayanhiti Palace before May 27.

According to sources, Maoist Chairman Prachanda told reporters that a message had been sent to the king, asking him to vacate the palace a day before the first Constituent Assembly meet takes place on May 28.

Likewise, another prominent leader of Maoists, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, has warned if the king does not leave the palace gracefully, strong action would be taken against him. Dr. Bhattarai also said the king could be accepted as a normal citizen but not as a “cultural monarch.”
