Spectacular achievement in Plus Two examinations

Staff Reporter

Karur district achieves an overall pass percentage of 92

KARUR: Till some time back, Karur district was categorised as industrialised but backward with regard to academics. The just-announced results of the Plus Two exams has changed the overall educational profile of the district what with Karur standing third in the State in overall pass percentage at a creditable 92.

This is no mean achievement for the district and comes on top of a coordinated, multi-pronged assault to achieve a podium finish.

Last year saw Karur achieve pass percentage of 89 and was pegged at the sixth position. District Collector T.N. Venkatesh counselled principals and urged the Department of School Education officials and teachers to secure an all-round improvement in not just the pass percentage but also in providing assistance in counselling and career guidance.

For the benefit of Plus Two students, Mr. Venkatesh took the initiative in conducting several programmes on confidence-building such as the “Neengalum Saathikkalam”, brought in education specialists for providing tips on facing the heat of competitive exams and regular subjects, conducting regular meetings of officials to tone up and review performances periodically.

Incidentally, the competition among the schools in the district to outwit each other in a healthy competition definitely helped the cause.

All these factors conjured up a vision of Karur district achieving something spectacular in the public exams.

State ranks

Students who appeared for the exams gave the expectations a definite shape and secured several State ranks in various subjects from languages to vocational courses.

A total of 6,291 students took the exams in the district and 5,788 of them came up trumps. Karur district came third (92 per cent) only behind Virudhunagar (95.87 per cent) and Thoothukudi (93.69 per cent).

In English language, B. Gayathri of Bharani Park Matriculation Higher Secondary School beat all competition to be ranked first in the State, scoring 195 out of 200.

Shaheena Nikmat of Uzzwatun Hasana Arabic Oriental Girls Higher Secondary School, Pallappatti, scored 194 in Arabic to be ranked first in the State.

Her schoolmate Nazreen Laila Bhanu topped the State in Fashion Designing. B. Yoga Priya of Cheran Matriculation Higher Secondary School has secured the second rank in the State in Tamil scoring 197 marks.
