Telugu Desam Party in ‘Catch-22’ situation

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) may now be faced with a ‘Catch-22’ situation following Tuesday’s rejection of the nomination of Ramesh Rathod for the byelections in Khanapur (ST) Assembly constituency. The party is left with the choice of making his wife Suman its candidate as she had filed nomination as a substitute from the constituency.

Mr. Rathod, who is Adilabad Zilla Parishad chairman, told newsmen after receiving a copy of the nomination rejection letter from the Returning Officer (RO) and ITDA Project Officer M.M. Naik’s office that he will go in appeal against the order of the Election Commission. The ZP chairman reluctantly accepted becoming the party nominee. He was instead in favour of his wife being selected as the party candidate.

Ms. Suman’s nomination as a substitute candidate of TDP was filed as an after thought on the last day of nominations. Though nobody concurs on the contention but it is apparent that party bosses apprehended problems in view of Mr. Rathod’s conviction.
