Kingfisher plans flights to Singapore

Ananth Krishnan

CHENNAI: Kingfisher Airlines is looking to launch flights in the in-demand Chennai-Singapore sector from early next year.

The airline has filed for slots to begin operations from January 1, 2009, and will launch a daily night flight from Chennai.

It will be the fifth airline to enter this sector, following the launch of the low-cost carrier Tiger Airways’ operations last year.

An airline representative said that while the airline was looking at several Southeast Asian routes from southern destinations, they were still in the planning stage.

In the past 12 months, there has been a significant growth in the number of flights between Chennai and Southeast Asia, and to Singapore in particular. Around 3,700 additional seats have been added in the Chennai-Singapore sector during 2008 alone.
