KOLLAM: A 50-year-old elephant, Mohandas, died from rabies at Policode, near Kottarakara, on Tuesday. The elephant, which found standing on its hind legs difficult, had been under intensive medical treatment for 10 days. Rabies was confirmed only on Monday. The mahouts and others who attended on the elephant have been advised to take anti-rabies vaccination. The former Minister R. Balakrishna Pillai owned the elephant. The tests for rabies was done on the instructions of B. Aravind, veterinary surgeon and technical adviser to the elephant squad of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. While treating the animal, he had noticed progressive posterior paralysis, a symptom of rabies. Also, its tail had become numb. Dr. Aravind said a post-mortem examination would be conducted before cremation.
