Major water project for desert region

Special Correspondent

Four towns and 932 villages to benefit

JAIPUR: Supply of drinking water to as many as 64 villages in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan as part of the ambitious Manaklav-Khangta scheme is set to solve the problems of receding ground water level, salinity and excess fluoride contents.

The scheme will bring waters from the Himalayas to the desert region.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje will lay the foundation stone for the scheme, to be executed at a cost of Rs.91.52 crore, at a function in Ratkudia village of Jodhpur district on Wednesday.

Chief Engineer (Projects) K.S. Mathur said here on Tuesday that the scheme would complete the work within the next year for supplying 23,914 litres of water a day to an estimated population of 2.97 lakh in the region.

Nine of the targeted villages are situated in Sursagar Assembly constituency, 19 in Bhopalgarh and 36 in Bilara.

The project is aimed at providing clean drinking water to four towns and 932 villages and hamlets in Jodhpur district.

While a joint raw water pipeline of 1,000 mm diameter is being laid from the Indira Gandhi Canal head at Indroka to Manaklav, various structures will be constructed for Manaklav-Khangta and Manaklav-Daijar-Banad schemes.

Mr. Mathur said filter plants and water tanks would be built for the two schemes by which clean water would be carried to villages by pumping through pipelines. Raw water will be directly pumped under the third Manaklav-Dantiwara scheme.

With the parallel works in the targeted villages having been launched in November 2007, the scheme is set to permanently resolve the drinking water problem in the region.
