VISAKHAPATNAM: A weeklong ‘padayatra’ conducted by the Communist Party of India concluded at the Ambedkar statue near LIC Building here on Tuesday. The awareness rally, organised to educate tribals and people of the plains about the dangers of bauxite mining, commenced at Jerrila village in the agency on May 7. The party activists, led by CPI District Council secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, addressed passers-by at Chintapalli, Marripalem, Narsipatnam, Anakapalle and Gajuwaka. He found fault with the State Government for signing an MoU with Ras-Al-Khaima (RAK) and Jindal which came forward to invest only Rs.4,500 crores in the project while refusing permission to the public sector National Aluminum Company (NALCO) that promised to invest Rs.45,000 crores in the project. He alleged that both RAK and Jindal had no experience or expertise in bauxite mining and refining and opined that they would export the raw material to other countries. The CPI activists will picket the Collectorate here on Wednesday.
