Kakinada: The police have arrested two farmers representing the SEZ Vyatireka Porata Samiti, at U.Kotthapalli on the charge of obstructing the process of land acquisition for the Kakinada SEZ. Some more activists of the anti-SEZ committee will be arrested shortly, according to Kakinada DSP S. Surya Rao. Cases have been booked against several people of U.Kotthapalli, Srirampuram and Moolapeta villages recently for dismantling the fencing around a piece of land acquired for the SEZ and removing display boards. They had vowed to not allow the lands to be acquired for the SEZ without their being properly compensated for the loss and refused to allow land acquisition process to be continued. Today’s arrests precede by a few days the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC)’s hearing into complaints of forcible acquisition of land and alleged oppression of the farmers whose lands were sought to be taken away for the SEZ developer. Human Rights Forum State secretary V.S. Krishna condemned the arrests. .
