“53,000 petitions received under Right to Information Act”

TIRUVARUR: A total of 53,000 petitions have been received in the past two and a half years in the State under the Right to Information Act and disposed, said R. Rethinasamy, Information Commissioner at Tiruvarur on Tuesday.

He conducted direct enquiry on 13 petitions received from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.

He later told presspersons that direct enquiry by commissioners (there are three information commissioners in the State now) are conducted district-wise now. Previously direct enquiry was conducted only in Chennai.

Through direct enquiry 2020 petitions were taken for disposal out of which 250 had been disposed so far. Rest will also be disposed in the direct enquiries conducted by the information commissioners in the districts.

Through direct enquiry, awareness is created among people about the act and officers are also trained. Every district has an information officer to provide information under the act.

They have been given training.

The training was conducted at thirty places in the state.

A fine of Rs.25,000 is imposed on officers who don’t provide information as per the Act. If he doesn’t pay the fine, it will be recovered from his salary. Out of 13 petitions taken for direct enquiry at Tiruvarur on Tuesday, three are from Tiruvarur district, two from Nagapattinam district and 13 from Thanjavur district.

From Tiruvarur district alone 322 petitions were received in the last two-and-a-half years, 149 have been disposed and 173 are under enquiry.

The Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, was present at the press conference.
