CHANAGANASSERY: Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and member of the first Kerala Assembly A.M. Kalyanakrishnan Nair died here on Tuesday. The 82-year-old leader had been ailing for the past many months and was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi. His body will be cremated on the premises of his house at Mathumoola near here on Wednesday afternoon. Nair had entered politics when he was a student of law and was elected to the Changanassery Municipal Council in 1954. He was the leader of the legendary ‘Velliprakkal farm labour agitation’ which started in 1955. He sustained severe physical assault in the consequent police action. He was also jailed. He was elected to the Kerala Assembly in the first Assembly elections. However, Nair later withdrew from electoral politics and focused on trade union activities and his legal career. He his survived by his wife and three children. Shops will remain closed from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the town as a mark of respect. Death mournedCPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargan has expressed sorrow at the death of Kalyanakrishnan Nair. In a condolence message in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, Mr. Bhargavan recalled that Kalyanakrishnan Nair had played a pivotal role in organising agricultural workers in upper Kuttanad and performed brilliantly as a member of the Assembly.
