News Analysis
* There were several queries on the placement of a football graphic captioned “The Transfer Window” below an unrelated news item on cricket, “‘We can challenge Australia’” (“Sport”, May 13, 2008). The graphic was a compilation on Mathieu Flamini and Aliaksandr Hleb, two of Arsene Wenger’s best performers. It was meant to be a standalone graphic separated, by a horizontal line, from the cricket news item. It was a design error. The missing line was what created the confusion. * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “A one stop cybershop for elections” (“Newscape” page, May 12, 2008) was “High-Flying: Founder CEO of ElectionMall [Ravi Singh] with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. — Photo: Special Arrangement”. At this stage neither Mrs Clinton nor Barack Obama can be called the Democratic presidential candidate as both are still campaigning to win the Democratic Party’s nomination. If anything, Mrs Clinton has on present indications less chance of being nominated as her party’s candidate. * The caption of a standalone photograph titled “‘Cold’ comfort” (Coimbatore, May 11, 2008, page 2) was “How Nice: This eagle seems to be beating the heat in the puddle of water inside the Town Hall in Tirupur.” The bird in the picture is a Pale Harrier. It is a graceful hawk. * The strapline of an article “Lettuce delicacies add value to food” (City Edition – Visakhapatnam, May 13, 2008, page 2) was “Foreigners patronage it to a great extent for its protein value”. It should have been patronise. * The third paragraph of a report “Anbumani must quit: BJP” (May 9, 2008) was “It was during her tenure [BJP leader Sushma Swaraj] as Health Minister that the noted cardiologist [Dr. P. Venugopal] was appointed Director of AIIMS with a fixed tenure that would have kept him in his job well beyond the age of 65 years.” Dr. Venugopal is a cardio-thoracic surgeon, as mentioned in another report in the same edition “AIIMS Director resumes charge”. (We had issued a similar correction in this column on July 18, 2006, April 3, 2007 and March 11, 2008.) * The second paragraph in a report “Bengali labourers found murdered [in Malappuram, Kerala] (May 9, 2008) was “Police said the brothers belonged to Milanpalli in Jaipalguri district of West Bengal.” It should have been Jalpaiguri. * The second paragraph in a report “Amid drama, Women’s Bill tabled in the Rajya Sabha” (May 7, 2008, page 1) was “The Bill, popularly known as the Women’s Reservation Bill, seeks to provide one-third of the seats to women in Parliament and State Assemblies”, leading to a query. The Special Correspondent clarifies that the Women’s Reservation Bill applies to the House of People (Lok Sabha) and the State Assemblies. The word “Parliament” was used in a broad sense, but is incorrect. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
