Nurses honoured for their selfless service

International Nurses Day celebrated

Student-nurses and nurses of the Institute of Child Health hold candles to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale on Monday.

Chennai: Sankara Nethralaya Medical Research Foundation celebrated International Nurses Day, the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, on Monday by presenting awards to 12 nurses who had completed 10 years of service.

Theme

The theme of the celebrations was delivery of quality services and prevention of hospital-borne infections.

Ram Gopala Krishnan, consultant physician (infectious diseases) in Apollo Hospitals, spoke on the importance of hand-washing for nurses and health care workers to prevent spread of diseases from one patient to another.

He stressed on the use of protective equipment such as gloves, masks and goggles. Proper ventilation is also required in hospitals.

Quality of service

Lysa Sagar, nursing superintendent of Sankara Nethralaya, spoke on the achievements in improving quality of service. She said that use of formaldehyde had been replaced by a safer disinfectant in operation theatres.

Candle lights ceremony

At the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, nurses participated in a candle light ceremony and cultural programmes such as ‘karagattam’ and ‘kolattam.’

ICH Deputy Director K. Githa said nurses played a very important role in the healthcare system. Nursing studies and research can be taken up to the doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

Assistant Resident Medical Officer K. Mohankumar, Nursing Superintendent R. Renuka Bai and S. Sathyaa, principal (in charge) of the School of Nursing were present on the occasion.
