Papers’ scrutiny enlivens scene

Special Correspondent

Rumours of former Minister and TD candidate’s papers being rejected spread

HYDERABAD: The otherwise normal scrutiny of nomination papers for the bypoll to the city Assembly constituencies got livened up on Tuesday.

Rumours spread that former Minister and Telugu Desam Party’s candidate for Secunderabad Assembly constituency had his nomination papers rejected.

MLA Quarter dues

It turned out to be false but not without drama preceding it. Earlier, Congress candidate Pitla Krishna complained to the Returning Officer, Bhimla Naik, that the candidature of Mr. Yadav should be cancelled because of pending dues of his MLAs Quarter in Adarshnagar.

Mr. Krishna charged the TDP candidate of not paying rent and other bills of his Q. No. 10 and the dues were up to Rs. 4.75 lakh.

The pending payment was revealed in the affidavit filed during the last elections and was not mentioned this time.

It was a good enough reason to disqualify Mr. Yadav was his contention.

Election officials asked for documentary proof to be submitted and in the meantime, also took the matter to the higher officials.

But, Congress leaders were unable to come out with any sort of proof and RO cleared Mr. Yadav’s papers.

The TDP leader has stated that the payment dues can be cut from the pension he gets as a former MLA.

“The Congress Party and its candidate are resorting to false propaganda unable to face me directly in the electoral contest,” he maintained.

Other than both these candidates, 13 other candidates remain in the fray for the constituency including T. Padma Rao of TRS and 10 other Independents. Nomination papers for two candidates were rejected.

Twelve candidates are vying for the Musheerabad constituency including N. Narasimha Reddy of TRS, T. Manemma of Congress, K. Laxman of BJP and S. Veeraiah of CPI-M.

Eight other candidates too are in the fray and two candidates’ nomination papers were rejected.

Eleven candidates are contesting for the Khairatabad constituency like Congress’ P. Vishnuvardhan Reddy and Mohd. Khaja Arifuddin of TRS.

Nine other candidates have also filed their papers while three candidates’ papers were rejected.
