Set to change: With several agencies set to come together, help for the victims may arrive fast. A scene after the fire at a slum in Perungudi on Monday. Chennai: The Chennai Corporation, the Chennai Metrowater and the Fire and Rescue Services held a meeting on Tuesday to devise ways to prevent fire accidents and reduce damage in the event of accidents. Over the last two weeks, several fire accidents have gutted huts and damaged property. The three agencies will put their resources together to identify the shortest routes to reach fire-prone areas. The Corporation will ensure that approach roads to slums can accommodate fire tenders. The Metrowater usually has two filled tankers at each of the 13 water filling stations for fire-fighting operations. The word ‘Fire’ will be painted on the sides of the tankers so that the vehicles are allowed to make their way quickly through traffic. Fire-prone zones in the city include Kilpauk Asprin Garden, Thiruvanmiyur – Besant Nagar, the stretch from Nochikuppam to Srinivasapuram, the hutments along the Adyar in Saidapet, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar in Ashok Nagar, Sivashanmugapuram in Vepery, hutments along the Cooum in Egmore, slums in Vyasarpadi, Kasimedu – Royapuram and the area near the Kodungaiyur garbage dump. Pamphlets on fire safety will be given to residents. A fire tender is to be stationed at the fire-prone Thideer Nagar in Saidapet. Mayor M. Subramanian chaired the meeting. Corporation Additional Commissioner Kakarla Usha, director of Fire and Rescue Services K.R. Shyamsundar, Metrowater Managing Director Shiv Das Meena and Chief Engineer G. Elangovan participated in the meeting.
