CHENNAI: Cooperative marketing societies play a key role in controlling the prices of essential commodities and if cooperative staff, farmers and consumers work together it will be possible to keep the prices under check, said Cooperation Minister Ko.Si. Mani here on Tuesday.

Addressing the valedictory of a two-day workshop on marketing for officials of cooperative marketing societies, the Minister said the societies were formed to ensure remunerative price to farmers for their produce and sell them at a competitive price to consumers.

A perfect coordination between the two would keep the prices of essential commodities under control.

The Minister asked the employees to take the Tiruchengodu Cooperative Marketing Society as their model and adopt the same strategies in their societies. He admitted that cooperative societies had some inherent problems. These could be overcome only by adopting new marketing techniques and improving the turnover.

The Minister on the occasion distributed shields to cooperative societies for their best performance.

Food and Cooperation Secretary K.Shanmugham asked the marketing societies not to move away from their core business of procuring produce from farmers and selling it at a reasonable price to consumers.

“Think innovatively”

In the highly competitive market, societies should think of innovative ways such as value-added services to consumers to improve their turnover.

Jatindra Nath Swain, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, said the societies should act as a coordinator between farmers and consumers.

They must be aware of buyers’ requirement and pass it on to farmers.

Storage facilities in the societies should be improved so that farmers could pledge their produce and get 75 per cent of the market price.

L.Sitherasenan, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, in his welcome address, said there were 110 cooperative marketing societies in the States.

Of these, 92 societies were running on profit as on March 31, 2008 as against 70 in the previous financial year. The societies market paddy, chillis, cotton and other farm products. Their turnover in the last financial year was Rs 1,050 crore and the current year it is targeted to cross Rs 1,350 crore.
