CII’s skill training to cover 15,000 workers
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will provide skill training to 15,000 skilled and unskilled workers, 20,000 students and 6,000 teachers, in the first phase of its programme, during this year.
CII Tamil State Council chairman Manikam Ramaswami told reporters Monday that skill development, agro business, rural development, health care and infrastructure development would be the areas of focus for the CII during 2008-2009.
Under the skill development initiative, he said, training would be provided to 1,500 lift operators and truck drivers in Madurai, 1,000 welding operators in Tiruchi, 1,500 machine operators in Coimbatore and 1,000 building workers in Chennai. Besides, a continuous skill upgrade programme would train 10,000 workers in emerging services such as e-publishing, BPO, healthcare and hospitality.
Mentoring students
To help students pursue academic education, the CII would train and mentor more than 5,000 students to become industry-ready and organise ‘CEO Speak’ series for 15,000 students. It would conduct training for 1,000 teachers in soft skills, in collaboration with major universities, and train 5,000 teachers in information and communication technology. “Initially, this number may look small. We can go on increasing the number depending upon the requirement. Each training session will be of at least three months,” Mr. Ramaswami said.
