Special cell to protect sandalwood trees
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Forest Department will set up a special cell to protect sandalwood trees and encourage planting of saplings in the current fiscal, Forest Minister N. Selvaraj announced in the Assembly on Tuesday.
The cell, to be headed by a Chief Conservator of Forests, would function from Vellore, the Minister said, while replying to the debate on demands for grants for the Forest Department.
Phase II of the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Project would be implemented in 230 villages, including tribal villages surrounding forest areas.
It would cover 51,500 ha of degraded forests, to be restored by planting 96.50 lakh saplings at a cost of Rs.113 crore. Specific tree species would be planted, not only to increase tree cover, but also for providing minor forest produce and medicinal plants to the local people, he said.
