COLOMBO: A senior leader of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), Maheshwari Velyanthan, was shot dead at her residence in Jaffna on Tuesday evening. Ms. Maheshwari, a confidant of EPDP leader and Social Welfare Minister, Douglas Devananda, was visiting her ailing mother. “Ms. Maheshwari had gone to Jaffna along with some relatives to see her mother. As per our information, three men in military uniform came to the house and wanted to search the house. Ms. Maheshwari was shot at by the gunmen and they fled. She was rushed to hospital in a critical state,” Mr. Devananda told The Hindu. Mr. Devananda and other EPDP leaders have been on the LTTE’s hit-list. Two months ago, Mr. Devananda escaped an assassination attempt by a suspected LTTE suicide bomber; it was the 11th attempt on the life.
