Sport 18, a division of Network 18 and end-to-end sports management solutions provider, has acquired the marketing of the Volvo Ocean Race India’s stopover in Kochi between December 3-13. Major companies in Mumbai and Bangalore were among those who participated in the bid. Sport 18 has tied up with Screenery media Pvt Ltd to provide outdoor marketing for the event.

The Cochin Port Trust will organise the stopover, hand in hand with Kerala Tourism Department. The 2008-09 event will be the 10th running of this ocean marathon. Starting from Alicante in Spain on October 4, it will visit the ports in Asia for the first time. Spanning some 39,000 nautical miles, stopping at 11 ports and taking nine months to complete, the Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s premier yacht race.

Mr N. Ramachandran, chairman, Cochin Port Trust, said the stopover at Cochin would be one of the most exciting extravaganzas that the country has ever witnessed. Apart from the world’s fastest ocean racing yachts with state-of-the-art technology back up, the event would also attract hundreds of other luxury yachts and sailing vessels, making the event spectacular.

“We are delighted to appoint the consortium of Network 18-CNBC TV 18 and Screenery Media as our marketing partners,” he said.

Dr. V. Venu, secretary, Kerala Tourism said he expected the Kochi stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race to be a landmark event, taking Kerala into the international spotlight.

“Kerala has a wealth of water bodies, and we expect that the Race will give us an opportunity to showcase this to the world,” he said.

Satish Menon, CEO, Sport 18 said the Volvo Ocean Race was one of the biggest and prestigious events in the sport calendar and that Sport 18 and Network 18 were dedicated to the sport of sailing.
