KOCHI: Ernakulam district topped the points tally in the eighth Kerala State ITC Arts Festival, which began on Tuesday at Renewal Centre here. The district has won 98 points, with Kottayam and Alappuzha in the second and third positions. Earlier in the day, Mayor Mercy Williams inaugurated the festival. She spoke of the role played by such events in boosting the creative talents of youth. This gives them a break from their monotonous lifestyle. Sebastian Paul, MP, said in his presidential address that youth need to find time to relax, in this mechanised world. Soman C. P., general convenor of the festival, said that Ernakulam were the champions six times in succession. Nineteen of the 42 items scheduled for the event got over on Tuesday. Over 1,200 students who topped in district-level events are participating in the festival. Minister for Labour K. P. Gurudasan will be the chief guest at the valedictory session on Wednesday.
