Shortage of 10,000 Plus Two seats in Ernakulam district

Staff Reporter

More than 36,000 students qualify for the course

KOCHI: The record 94.9 SSLC pass percentage might have brought cheer to many but there is a shortage of over 10,000 seats in the regular higher secondary stream in Ernakulam district. More than 36,000 students qualified for higher secondary seats on Tuesday and not all of them might be able to find a berth in schools.

According to the figures available with the Regional Higher Secondary Directorate here, there are 179 schools in the government, aided and unaided streams in the district offering higher secondary programmes.

Out of the total 179, 136 are in the government and aided streams. On an average, there are 60 seats in a batch in each school. The number of batches will not be equal but on an average two batches exist in majority of the schools in the district. Even though the higher secondary directorate does not have an official estimate about the total number of higher secondary seats, figures provided by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education at Thiruvananthapuram pointed out that about 26,000 students in the regular stream in Ernakulam district had appeared for the plus two final year examination held in March this year.

Officials at the regional higher secondary directorate said that the average admission capacity in each government school located within the city limits is around 300. But it might vary according to the number of batches available in each school.

For example, the intake capacity at Government Girl’s Higher Secondary School, Ernakulam South, is over 400. In the Science stream, the school has three batches with an average strength of 60 seats. There are two batches each in the Commerce and Humanities stream.

The selection of students for the plus one level will be based on the guidelines prepared by SCERT. The total marks scored by the student along with the marks in the subject in which they had applied for will be considered for admission. Each grade has been given a point. A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C+ = 5, C = 4, D+ = 3.

The admission will be based on the Grading Point Average (GPA) scored by each student. GPA is calculated by dividing the total points by the total number of subjects (10). For example, if a student scored 65 points for all the papers, his GPA will be calculated by dividing 65 with 10.

If a student is applying for Science stream, his grades for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics will be taken for calculating GPA.

In the next stage of selection process, the average of total points in all 10 papers and average for the subject applied for will be added together to find out the Weighted Grade Point Average (WGPA). WGPA for a student applying for Science stream with 65 (total points for 10 papers) and 32 (for science subjects) will be calculated by adding 65 and 32. The total of 97 points will be divided by 15 points (10 papers plus five papers under Science). The Weighted Grade Point Average will be always less than 10. Admission process will be done using the software made by the National Informatics Centre. The software will be soon made available in all schools.
