To be implemented with Literacy Mission’s help Project targets more than 3.1 million people MALAPPURAM: Malappuram district will implement a literacy project aimed at providing total primary education. The district panchayat will implement the project to be rolled out with the help of the State Literacy Mission. The project will be implemented through the local bodies, said panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed. Out of the 102 grama panchayats and five municipalities in the district, Chelembra and Nilambur panchayats have already implemented the project. Mr. Mohammed said that Malappuram would become the first district in the State to provide total primary education to more than 3.1 million people. Grama panchayats will have to keep aside Rs.50,000 for the project. More funds will be raised for the second phase of the project, said Mr. Mohammed. He said the district panchayat would provide books ad training required for the project. The district plan committee has already given the go-ahead for the first phase of the project, implemented by the district panchayat, the block panchayats of Tanur, Tirurangadi and Malappuram, and the municipalities of Malappuram, Perinthalmanna, Tirur, Manjeri and Ponnani.
