Punjab records 37 per cent growth in wheat procurement

CHANDIGARH: Six government agencies and private millers in Punjab have procured more than 101.96 lakh metric tonnes of wheat compared to 74.33 lakh metric tonnes procured till date last year, recording a growth of over 37 per cent.

An official spokesman said here on Wednesday that out of 101.96 lakh metric tonnes procured till date, 9,617,394 metric tonnes (94.3 per cent) had been procured for the Central pool and 287,286 metric tonnes (2.8 per cent) for the State pool whereas traders lifted 292.303 metric tonnes.

The spokesman said that Punjgrain had procured 1,792,674 metric tonnes (18.6 per cent) whereas Markfed procured 2,306,493 metric tonnes (24 per cent). Punsup procured 2,207,546 metric tonnes (23 per cent), Punjab State Warehousing Corporation 1,177,397 metric tonnes (12.4 per cent). Ferozepur district with 1,189,471 metric tonnes led in procurement operations and Sangrur district with 946,872 metric tonnes was second. –PTI
