Realtor agrees to return lands to farmers

Special Correspondent

It was fraudulently sold without their knowledge

TINDIVANAM: Eleven small and marginal farmers of Peramandur and Thenbazaar areas in Tindivanam taluk heaved a sigh of relief on Monday after coming to know that they would soon get back their scant land-holdings fraudulently sold to a Delhi realtor without their knowledge.

In reconciliation talks held under Tindivanam Deputy Superintendent of Police K.Kumar, here, the representatives of the Delhi realtor, Sharma and Mukundan agreed to return the land, measuring 23 acres, to the original owners before May 22. They also accepted to bear the cost of re-registration of the property.

The DSP told The Hindu that initially five small farmers lodged a complaint with Superintendent of Police (Villupuram) A.Amalraj stating that they were cheated of their lands through forged power-of-attorney documents. Soon after six more farmers preferred similar complaints with the SP. These lands were registered in 2006 and the farmers came to know of the transactions only when they went to remit the property tax. Meanwhile, District Collector Brajendra Navnit who also received petitions from the affected farmers ordered an official probe.

Probe

Therefore, to find out the nature of transactions involved a team led by Mr. Kumar and consisting of Tindivanam Tahsildar Kalyanam, Sub-Registrars and Village Administrative Officers conducted an inquiry with the representatives of the realtor and the affected farmers.

Mr. Kumar said the realtor had bought 500 acres of land at Tindivanam to promote farmhouse and resorts. Of these, 23 acres were registered on the strength of power-of-attorney documents prepared without the knowledge of the original owners.

During the inquiry the realtors stated that they wanted a straight deal and none of their dealings should be clouded by controversy. Hence, they agreed to return the disputed lands to the original owners and bear the cost on the same.

As the issue was sorted out amicably to the full satisfaction of the farmers no criminal or legal proceedings had been initiated against the realtor, Mr. Kumar added.
