PANAJI: The Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Kerala, and the Goa Government on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a comprehensive study on migration in the State. The CDS will conduct the study along with the Department of Planning and Statistics, Goa, and the Xavier Centre for Historical Research. The initiative has been taken by Goa Commissioner of Non-Resident Indian Affairs Eduardo Faleiro. According to Mr. Faleiro, a former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, the aim of the project is to study the migration from and into the State and analyse its impact on the State’s socio-economic situation. Mr. Faleiro said that the study would also seek to find out the number of people who had migrated, ward-wise, from every village and to understand the problems they faced in the countries of their destination. An attempt would be made to know the problems of the families left behind and understand how the money, which is being repatriated, was being used for. After the signing of the MoU, CDS chairman K.N. Nair said that after Goa the CSD would take up a similar study in Punjab.
