Six drown in two places

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Six persons, including three children, drowned at two different places in Villupuram district on Tuesday.

Three children — S.Thenmalar (10) and her cousins R.Tamilarasan (eight) and R.Senthamil Selvan (seven) — went along with their grandfather Chinnapaiyan (62) to have a bath in a tank at Vanjaram near Malaikottalam in Kallakurichi taluk.

The tank was recently deepened under the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. Unaware of the depth, the children stepped into the water and since they did not know swimming they drowned.

In another incident at Vadaponparappi three sisters — Jeevitha (24), R.Savitha (17) and R.Kavitha (16) — went to the tank at Ravuthanallur to wash clothes.

The tank too was recently desilted under the NREG scheme.

When the women unknowingly ventured some distance into the tank they slipped into a pit and drowned.

The police said Savitha and Kavitha, residents of Pudupettai, had gone to the house of Jeevitha (she is married off to Kumar) at Vadaponparappi to spend the vacation. The police have booked cases.
