Panchayats seek more funds

Staff Reporter

To help them meet expenses

‘Fund allotment should go up to 30 per cent’

Local bodies want devolution of more power

PERUNDURAI: Panchayat representatives in Perundurai Union have urged the State Government to increase funds to panchayats.

In a resolution passed at the meeting of local body representatives, Vattara Alavilana Ull- latchip Prathinithigal Manadu, here on Wednesday, the members said the devolution of funds from State Government’s income at present stood at nine per cent.

With around 70 per cent of the State’s population in rural areas, the State Government should increase the allotment to 30 per cent to help the panchayats, panchayat unions and district panchayats meet expenses.

The local body representatives also sought for grant of powers to execute works under 29 heads.

They said the powers that were delegated by way of the 73rd Constitution amendment were yet to be granted by the State Government and that it should be done at the earliest. They also sought for implementation of the recommendations given by Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin on devolution of more power to local bodies.

Other demands of the elected representatives include power to appoint conservancy staff, panchayat clerks, gang men to repair and reconstruct roads, etc. On the development front, the local body representatives sought restoration of ‘Local Roads Grant’ and ‘Education Grant’. They said the ‘Local Roads Grant’ had been in existence until a few years ago and had been stopped since. Restoration of the grant would help the panchayats maintain and upkeep roads.

Similarly, they also sought for ‘Education Grant’ to take up development works in schools.
