Two new centres for engineering counselling

Additional 93,000 students likely to attend

The new centres are in Secunderabad and Vijayawada

Earlier, candidates from Vijayawada had to go to Guntur

HYDERABAD: The Government has created two additional centres for engineering counselling this year apparently to accommodate additional 93,000 candidates who took the engineering test in the EAMCET and finish the counselling on time.

The new centres are – Government Institute of Printing Technology, Secunderabad, and the Government Polytechnic, Vijaywada.

For the past few years students were attending engineering counselling from six centres across the State that include Sanketika Vidya Bhavan, Hyderabad, Government Polytechnics in Vishakaptnam, Warangal, Kadapa and Tirupati and Government Polytechnic for Women in Guntur.

“The infrastructure is good at these centres and the necessary computers and other paraphernalia like the dedicated internet lines are being installed at a cost of around Rs. 25 lakh,” said an official.

The centres will not only accommodate the additional candidates likely to appear for the counselling but also cut short the distance to many candidates from small towns and rural candidates.

Earlier, Vijayawada did not had any centre and everyone in the region had to go to Guntur while the new centre in Secunderabad will also help students coming from nearby districts as it is nearer to the railway station and the bus station. “They will also ease pressure on the existing centres,” an official said.

The centre at Hyderabad had been attracting maximum students and the existing infrastructure was insufficient to accommodate them thus delaying counselling. The new facility at Secunderabad will help in diverting some candidates. Due to the complicated permutations and combinations in reservations like region, gender and social status and the vast number of colleges, engineering counselling stretches up to two months every year. Second counselling for sliding students also adds to the delay.

However, this year an additional 93,000 students are likely to come for counselling and that would have stretched the schedule beyond August if additional centres were not created.

This year 2,70,410 candidates registered for the engineering test as against 1,87,213 last year. About 95 per cent of registered candidates took the test that was held on May 8.
